An action for one program

Actions belong to app groups. The Global group works in every program. An app group works only in the windows its rules describe, for example every Notepad window. This page makes a gesture that opens Notepad's Replace box, and only in Notepad.

Create it

Where should it work?
In every program
Only in one program
RefreshPoint at a windowBrowse…
Programs with a window open
Notepad
notepad.exe
Microsoft Edge
msedge.exe
A new app group “Notepad” is made for it.
What should it do?
Send keys
Send a shortcut such as Ctrl+T.
Open a program, file or website
Keys to press
Ctrl+H
  1. Open Notepad, so it has a window.
  2. In the configuration window, click Quick create… (or press Ctrl+N), choose Do something when I draw a shape, and click Next.
  3. Choose Only in one program ①.
  4. In Programs with a window open, choose Notepad ②. If the program isn't listed, click Point at a window ③, hold the mouse button down, drag onto the program's window and let go, or click Browse… and choose the program file.
  5. Read the note under the list ④. It says which app group the action goes into: an app group that already covers the program, or a new one made for it. Click Next.
  6. Pick a shape. A card marked Here instead of: is a shape that already does something in Global. Choosing it is allowed: in Notepad your new action runs instead, and the Global action keeps working in every other program. Click Next.
  7. Choose Send keys ⑤. Click the Keys to press box ⑥, press Ctrl+H, and click Next.
  8. Click Create and apply.

Try it

Draw the shape over Notepad: its Replace box opens. Draw it over any other window: if the shape has a Global action, that action runs there, and otherwise nothing happens.

What was made

  • On the App groups page, a group for Notepad, with one rule on its Windows tab: the program file is notepad.exe. Every window of that program now belongs to the group.
  • On the Actions page, your action, in that group.

A gesture that the Notepad group has no action for still runs Global's action in Notepad. That is the group's Fall back to Global setting, which is on unless you turn it off. See App groups and Scope and fallback rules.
